[gender and literacy]

Sure women and men are different and sure our brains work differently but I didn't realise how drastically different. In a presentation on boys' writing and ict that I found at the Nottinghamshire Primary ICT Framework site there is a really interesting image of a girl's brain *at rest* and a boy's brain *at rest*:

"In the resting female brain, we find just as much neural activity as in the male brain that is solving problems."

Oh that is ENTIRELY cool! Now I know why I can't get my brain to turn off and why my boys seem to just tune out so easily... not to mention my husband - hee hee. Now, what is the difference between a mom's brain and a woman without kids? I am betting the mom has even more "at rest" activity...

I have to agree, it is really cool to see. However really, are you surprised?!?!?!

hey lisa good question! I'll have to look up to see if there are any studies on differences between women's brains (mums and not mums).

I guess this is why guys I know can (more) easily put things out of their minds...

No I'm not *really* surprised Jo but I am curious about the info as it seems to appear (at least in what I've found) in relation to boys and literacy and how educators should take this info into consideration with regards to how we teach boys. But what about girls? Doesn't this research suggest we should approach girls and literacy (and numeracy etc...) in a different manner?

hrm...

As the father of a girl I'm sure I can see something in this. But, just to stick up for the male of the species, it'd be nice to see comparison across a range of activities. One could put forward an evolutionary argument maybe that say, men switch off easier, but then are poised for action quicker, or whatever (think hunter-gatherers). And when confronted by shoes... (only joking).
