"Hillary Clinton is a PC, Barack Obama is a Mac."

- Michael Gove (he is conservative mp for Surrey Heath after all....)

I know there are some hard-core pc (as in ibm-type) vs mac debates out there and certainly, macs are goregeous (not too sure about Obama though!) but dells are catching up quickly in the style stakes.
Here is a fun pro-pc blog
post by Mike Rundle citing some things that pcs do better (yes, better) than macs:

  • Window Resizing (I also have a mac book pro and the auto window sizing can be a pain)
  • Menubar Interaction
    • Microsoft Office
Now, what is Gove trying to suggest, that looks are more important the performance? Hrm....

If I had to choose, I'd say you're a Mac baby yeah...

    Hello!

Great to see that you are a Mac fan too... don't be too hard on the Mac OS... Mike's article is nearly 3 years old and Apple have fixed many of those issues since then.

However, not wishing to enter the OS debate too much (and neither Windows nor Mac OSX is perfect) - the underlying productivity (Windows) versus creativity (Mac OSX) argument, I think, is of more interest.

Just in passing, I found a solution to maximising browser windows, where the 'green dot' fails.

    See Safari tools

You can bookmark the link to maximise windows too.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for your comment. Good point too, that Mike's post is 3 years old. Time moves quickly vis-a-vis technology. Re: the browser window: this issue has been plaguing us for ages and we've been relegated to minimising the ribbon (can't quite think what it's called in Mac-speak) and manually dragging the safari window as wide as it'll go. This is a great link. Thanks very much!

Ah, but without my lovely PCs I would never had learned all that really useful knowledge about operating system faults, viruses and general computer maintenance (that admittedly i never thought i needed or wanted to know).

    Hi Escha,
Ha ha! I think we're being too hard on pcs...there must be a reason why waaaay more people have them (and it can't just be price, can it?).

I've often suggested the success of the Windows platform has been putting together the whole package... and I don't mean the software.

There are several reasons, two of the biggest are:

    1. I believe Microsoft has capitalised on a much better marketing strategy than Apple a very long time ago. Apple were full of innovation but either people didn't get to know about it, or plainly didn't understand it, or just didn't know why they needed it. I think that is still true today - although Apple is getting much better at sending out the right messages.

    2. Microsoft won in the business sector, where Apple only managed to gain a reputation in the graphics, design and publishing world. I harp on about productivity... and Windows is great for simply achieving things. Office - it's flagship product gets tasks done. Once a piece of software has made it into the business environment, it soon filters through to the home. People wanted to be able to run the same software at work, as they do at home.

    3. Microsoft were able to support PC systems that sold for very little money. Apple just weren't competitive £ for £. Of course, we know differently. In terms of value for money, Apple products easily compete with their Windows counterparts in terms of money - longevity, quality of components, innovation, etc - but again, people didn't (don't) understand this and so my third reason is mostly users being ignorant of what you get when you buy a Mac. There are few other people to blame other than Apple, unfortunately.

On a positive, the tide is turning... and rapidly. Watch out over the next few years.... it's gonna be a rollercoaster if the last few haven't been already!

Is it just me, or can others not post from Safari?
