[Lecture: New Media and New Identities]

In today's (7 Dec. 2006) lecture we are going to talk about the changing notions of identity. We'll begin with an overview of some key theorists (including Mulvey, Butler, and Haraway) and then move on to specific examples.

All the links that we'll be following can be found here, in the order that I'll be presenting them:

One of the things students do is they test out identities. Maybe that is one new thing we are seeing now – more rapid changes of identity. Online you can get feedback and you can change at a moment’s notice” (Fred Stutzman, qtd here).

It made a nice change to be using the computers for once. My mind switches off when being lectured 'at'.

the lecture was really interesting but some of the stuff we saw was definetly a bit weird and hard to follow. futhermore the lecture was formative and useful to be continued throughout the module.

I thought the lecture was quite insightful, the waves of girls was interesting but a little confusing. I never really thought of writing a blog before but i would consider it now.

A clever way of approaching the lecture topic... though I remain sceptical if it actually made the point it was meant to.

We found the 'stories' disturbing and not true representation of female identity. If everyone was that way then the world would be a very screwed up place. That said, we do prefer the workshop atmosphere as opposed to a lecture theatre.

A very different lecture but quite frustrating as a very new topic for me! I found the work on 'waves of girls'quite tedious but i suppose thats down to it being very unfamiliar! I liked this idea for a lecture but the notes were rushed through..would have appreciated time to write things down so I can use this again.. over all wierd but better than being in a lecture room being talked at for 2 hours!!

What was the point of this again?

The webpage on the waves of girls was ridiculously disturbing, as encounters of a distressed sexually abused childhood is not something I am used to reading nor would I make time to want to read it voluntarily. I can understand that it is a personal reflection of life, however some notice or warining of what is to be included in the blog would be ideal. The party at the wood stories were quite confusing as it didnt seem to have a concluded ending or middle, so to call I wouldnt class it as a novel. However being in the computer room was a plus as it made us more active than passive.

we picked up new things about the web that we didnt know previously , for example: hyperfiction which will be a good resource for future work.xxxx

i like lecture theatres, this was not as good as i lost attention, but it was fun looking at peoples strange blogs and learning a little bit about how this is a reflection of peoples identities

I think what this lecture showed us is that identity as a concept doesn't really exist. its more about creating networks like u said and developing that way.

so parts were hard because i don't really use computers very much and my computer kept stopping so some blogs wouldnnt work. it was a good introduction to things online and how we can express who we are but that bloke had a very dirty room.
