[dial-up]
It's been ages since I've heard the tinkling of modems speaking...while the speed of the connection certainly suffers, the adjoining whirrs and static remind me of the act of connecting to the world out there, something I usually overlook with broadband's silence...

Yes! I love that sound. It's so... full of expectation and excitement. I can hear it now in my head. I can't believe someone hasn't sampled it. It must be available on the web somewhere? I want it to load on my page when it opens!
Welcome back!
Hi Mark,
I think that's a great idea for your site...as long as visitors aren't using dial-up as it's so slooooow! Sue has a great description in Hello World which I can't quite place but this one's apt too: "I direct the flickering arrow and double-click, staring rapt at the screen as my pupil's expand, my skin tightens, and my breathing quickens in anticipation. The LEDs glow brightly, searching for a starting point, until...Now! Connection is established. I glide forward into the knots and streamers of cyberspace, my brain opening itself wide like a rolling summer sky in cinemascope. The beeps and clicks of my synapses tune in with the fast running machine and together they sweep melodiously through the sea of information parting before them as they approach. This is meat and electricity conjoined..." (page 17).
To Nihilist,
Thanks! But I won't feel truly *settled* in until I have broadband up and running. ;)
